San Diego Comic-Con 2015 Cosplay Special

With so many of us stuck at home watching the events of Comic-Con unfold on YouTube, TV and social media here is a cosplay blog so we can all marvel at the amazing creations brought to life at his years event.

I’m from the UK so chances are I might only get over to San Diego once in my lifetime (unless I win the lottery or they invite me over because I’m awesome) but I’m certainly not jealous of all that crazy queuing for everything. You might think us Brits enjoy standing in orderly lines waiting for tea and crumpets but we really don’t.

This blog will be updated throughout the weekend so it’s probably going to get rather long, get ready for some epic scrolling. Are you the person under the mask / wig / makeup? Message me and I will add credits and links to the images.

The amazing artwork of Kai-Xiang Xhong

Kai-Xiang Xhong, also known as 鍾凱翔 makes beautiful and imaginative things from usually disposable materials such as card, drinking straws and fruit. His constructs come in all shapes and sizes and cover diverse subjects including movies, TV, animals, dinosaurs and pop culture. I’ve picked out a few pieces, from his huge body of work, that call out to my inner geek.

Retro toys and apparel by the Minion-Factory

Phil Postma has been a character designer for over 20 years in TV animation working on projects such as Flash Gordon and The Mask: Animated Series. His body of work can only be described as super geeky cool and can be seen over on his blog at the Minion-Factory.

The sheer quantity of quality illustrations would fill many articles, so I have picked out my favourite packaging and action figure re-designs from classic lines such as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Star Wars, Marvel’s Secret Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Six Million Dollar Man. If you feel like supporting an artist today go grab one of the many Minion-Factory t-shirt designs available at Redbubble.

Kenner Alien 18″ Action Figure, 1979

The amazing, and much sought after, Alien Action Figure from Kenner. What possessed them to release such an item with advertising aimed at children is anybody’s guess but it’s still one heck of a great toy.

Meanwhile, at the Kenner Factory in 1979……

Vintage Star Wars Toy Store Window Display.

Wow, if I had a time machine I probably shouldn’t go back in time just to drool at this window but I probably would. When local Toy Stores were the place to be and sales were booming thanks to a little movie franchise called ‘Star Wars’.

Darth Vader visited this store, the kids (and adults) must have gone wild!

Christmas Morning From Decades Past

There was a glass of sherry, a mince pie and a carrot placed on the fireplace and Father Christmas was on his way (despite the several naughty things I’m sure I had done that year). I remember that giddy thrill of going to bed on Christmas Eve and trying (pretending) to go to sleep while listening out for Santa and his reindeer driven sleigh jingling overhead and landing on the rooftop.

I woke stupidly early and crept downstairs to be greeted with colourfully wrapped presents of all shapes and sizes under the tree. Being an only child had some benefits. Some were in huge festive sacks (stop giggling) which would be taken upstairs and dumped out all over the bed by my father while I sat with my mum and excitedly ripped the paper off everything while completely ignoring the labels. Aunty who? This was my Christmas for several years until Star Wars, Action Man, Matchbox Cars and Arifix Soldiers made way for socks, shaving kits and soap on a rope.

These lucky kids know exactly what all this feels like as parents have been documenting this occasion since cameras were readily available for home use. These retro Christmas morning photographs are a snapshot in time that also remind us of the toys and games from our youth.

If you have similar photographs you would enjoy sharing with the world let me know, I could feature you in an upcoming article. Are you in any of these photographs? You deserve credit so either way Contact Me.

Impressive Star Wars Collection. Most Impressive.

Martin Campbell is on a mission. A mission to gather together one of the largest privately owned vintage Star Wars collections in Europe. The images below represent roughly half of this constantly expanding collection. Martin displays his favourite pieces and the rest is safely boxed up in storage until he can expand his collectors den.

I’ve collected this lot over the last twenty years, having owned most production pieces maybe up to half a dozen times as each one gets upgraded to C9+ or AFA 85 . If you collect I’m sure you can appreciate the time and money that goes along with that.”

My first piece was a Palitoy AT-ST in Jedi box and a 79 back Gamorrean Guard. I still have both, they are very special to me.”

Here are some highlights of this epic collection. Warning: Reading may lead to feelings of Jealousy. Jealousy leads to the Dark Side.

  • Canadian shrink-wrapped Snowspeeder

  • C9.5 sealed Tri-Logo Rancor

  • C9.5 sealed Tri-Logo B-Wing

  • 1st issue sealed AT-AT

  • Revenge of the Jedi boxed X-Wing

  • A full set of unpunched carded figure’s overall grade AFA 85

  • 41 back Boba Fett AFA 90

Special Offer Canadian Cloud City with Han Solo. Possibly the rarest playset that was ever produced. One of the only pieces to get 10/10 for rarity in Stephen Faucourt’s Star Wars Merchandising book.

This piece is beyond rare, I believe mine to possibly be of the highest graded condition in existence.”

And now a few photographs for your perusal. This collection also homes other collectable toys such as Action Force and MASK. As Darth Vader might say…. ‘Impressive. Most Impressive.”
