60 Iconic Weapons from Fiction

When we think of our favorite fictional characters, we often associate them with an item, or talisman, that is every bit as iconic as the characters themselves. In many cases, this item is a weapon. Weapons come in many forms; there are guns, swords, and everything in between. They can be as amazing as Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber or as unique as the Fat Man from the Fallout video game franchise.

Marvel’s Avengers Gundam by Aburaya Tonbi

As we know, huge robots, mobile suits and such like are a big thing in Japan. With this in mind Japanese artist Aburaya Tonbi  油屋とんび has illustrated a series of Marvel / Gundam mashups including  the current Avengers line-up of Captain∀merica, Wing Gundam “Thor”, Hulk Unicorn, Gelgoog Marine Hawkeye, Gerbera Black Widow and Iron Man Type 100. If it was an animated series, I’d watch it.

You can find more of Aburaya Tonbi’s work over on Pixiv. The artist deletes sketches from his account and uploads new versions, I’ve got several more deleted Marvel Gundam illustrations for another post (coming soon).

Movie, TV and comic book prop replicas by Ricardo Coutinho Dos Santos

I spotted these amazing prop replicas shared in a group while browsing Facebook. Thundercats, He-Man, She-Ra, Dungeons & Dragons, Superheroes and villains, quirky props and cult horror movies all feature in this great looking replica selection. Unbelievably, this talented artist makes these awesome items for his friends and fellow cosplaying brethren and has no website or Facebook page that I can find.

I’m not linking to Ricardo directly as getting bombarded by randomers asking questions might not be a high priority in this man’s life but these are way too good not to share. If you do want to contact Ricardo, he lives in Brazil and his first language is Portuguese.

For a larger selection of Ricardo’s work check out my Flickr Album.

BrazenMonkey costume design and sculpting by John Marks

Recently displaying his work at Derby City Comic Con in Louisville, KY, John Marks AKA BrazenMonkey has been sculpting since the late 80s.  John graduated from the University of Missouri with a BA in Art in 1993.  He received his certification as a special FX make-up artist from the Joe Blasco School of Special Make-up Artistry in 1995.  John has since been involved in a diverse number of projects.

BrazenMonkey costume design and sculpting by John Marks - Incredible Hulk
Generally, John’s sculpted works are all made the same way. He starts by building an armature for the chosen design. Oil based clay is then used to sculpt the piece into the armature. After all detailing is completed, John creates a mold or “negative” of his work using a brushed-on silicon. Support walls are created to provide extra reinforcement. Once the silicon and walls have solidified, the clay and armature are removed from the mold. The mold is then filled with a resin combination.

I’m impressed by the busts, large scale pieces and also intrigued by the production process. More images can be found via his BrazenMonkey Facebook page.
