Star Wars themed floats at the Aomori Nebuta Festival, Japan

The Aomori Nebuta Festival is one of Japan’s most colourful festivals as paper floats are paraded through the city of Aomori by enthusiastic locals. The floats are mostly inspired by Japanese folklore and regional myths but recently modern ‘pop culture’ style floats have joined the mix. This year the festivals organisers were approached by the mighty Disney Corporation / Lucasfilm Ltd. and a series of Star Wars inspired floats, built to promote the release of The Force Awakens, were designed and created.

Despite not being included in the parade that takes place through the towns centre, the floats have attracted much attention from Star Wars fans on social media and the 30,000+ festival visitors alike. In typical Disney style the floats were unveiled during the opening ceremony on the eve of the festival with Darth Vader, Stormtroopers and R2-D2 making guest appearances and meeting the towns Major on the red carpet.

Star Wars Nebuta are on display at the Aomori Nebuta Festival August 2 -7,  Nebuta House Wa Rasse in Aomori City, Japan.

Donkey Kong mash-ups by Pixel Baz

Pixel Artist Pixel Baz presents Donkey Kong mashed with pop culture movies and TV shows in classic 8-bit pixel-art style. As a retro gaming fan, and massive geek, these designs tick all the right boxes. Aliens, Adventure Time, Doctor Who, Star Wars and Sesame Street characters climb those sloping levels trying to reach the top, save their ally and hopefully take out the fiendish kidnapper at the end of the game (with a big sword, pulse rifle or in Cookie Monsters case a giant cookie distraction).

Steampunk Star Wars by Bjorn Hurri

Swedish artist Bjorn Hurri has created a wonderful series of steampunk character illustrations transporting the world of Star Wars to another realm (yet still a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….). Steam and vacuum powered droids, elegant and elaborate costumes, power armoured villains and daring heroes take on the roles of mechanics, pilots, tinkers, traders, soldiers and spies that would sit comfortably in a Jules Verne or H.G. Wells novel.

Museu do Caramulo Star Wars Collection

The Museu do Caramulo in Portugal features an impressive array of collectable toys, games and memorabilia including die-cast vehicles, train sets, classic toys and action figures.

Safe amongst the reserve items, held in storage, is a Star Wars collection belonging to Salvador Patrício Gouveia.

“Here’s part of my collection. Still, there’s a long road ahead. Some are from my childhood, some bought 20 years ago, some bought recently. Hope you enjoy them.” I did enjoy them, well worth sharing.

Impressive Star Wars Collection. Most Impressive.

Martin Campbell is on a mission. A mission to gather together one of the largest privately owned vintage Star Wars collections in Europe. The images below represent roughly half of this constantly expanding collection. Martin displays his favourite pieces and the rest is safely boxed up in storage until he can expand his collectors den.

I’ve collected this lot over the last twenty years, having owned most production pieces maybe up to half a dozen times as each one gets upgraded to C9+ or AFA 85 . If you collect I’m sure you can appreciate the time and money that goes along with that.”

My first piece was a Palitoy AT-ST in Jedi box and a 79 back Gamorrean Guard. I still have both, they are very special to me.”

Here are some highlights of this epic collection. Warning: Reading may lead to feelings of Jealousy. Jealousy leads to the Dark Side.

  • Canadian shrink-wrapped Snowspeeder

  • C9.5 sealed Tri-Logo Rancor

  • C9.5 sealed Tri-Logo B-Wing

  • 1st issue sealed AT-AT

  • Revenge of the Jedi boxed X-Wing

  • A full set of unpunched carded figure’s overall grade AFA 85

  • 41 back Boba Fett AFA 90

Special Offer Canadian Cloud City with Han Solo. Possibly the rarest playset that was ever produced. One of the only pieces to get 10/10 for rarity in Stephen Faucourt’s Star Wars Merchandising book.

This piece is beyond rare, I believe mine to possibly be of the highest graded condition in existence.”

And now a few photographs for your perusal. This collection also homes other collectable toys such as Action Force and MASK. As Darth Vader might say…. ‘Impressive. Most Impressive.”
