“On a whim I decided to try out painting some white slip on shoes I had. I ended up loving the amount of detail and precision involved and I realized I had discovered my new favourite crafting medium.”

Pixel Artist Pixel Baz presents Donkey Kong mashed with pop culture movies and TV shows in classic 8-bit pixel-art style. As a retro gaming fan, and massive geek, these designs tick all the right boxes. Aliens, Adventure Time, Doctor Who, Star Wars and Sesame Street characters climb those sloping levels trying to reach the top, save their ally and hopefully take out the fiendish kidnapper at the end of the game (with a big sword, pulse rifle or in Cookie Monsters case a giant cookie distraction).

“In my very distant past I worked for Bermans and Nathans Theatrical and Film Costumers in London, where I made wonderful and interesting things such as elf costumes for Santa Claus the Movie, Egyptian mummies for Young Sherlock Holmes and accessories for Indiana Jones. Later I worked as a seamstress with the designer John Galliano.”

“I simply don’t see any shoes out there that I like any more so I started decorating and embellishing my own. I still find that I’m learning how to work with different artistic mediums. As far as application methods are concerned, it’s still a work in process. Other than that I just try to see how much contextual detail I can cram into a $30 pair of kicks.”
